The best beach is not always the most famous one. It is the beach that fits your group, your villa and the kind of day you want.

Times are approximate, without stops; check the route on the day. From Villa Argiris in Stavromenos the north-coast beaches are a few minutes closer: Sfakaki is approx. 2 km · about 5 min, and Stavromenos beach is approximately 800 metres from Villa Argiris, although the most practical access depends on the route and local conditions.
The north coast east of Rethymno is a long stretch of coastline with different beach sections, usually named after the nearby village or resort. Access, facilities and sea conditions vary from one section to the next.

Stavromenos is a practical coastal choice for Villa Argiris guests. Stavromenos beach is approximately 800 metres from Villa Argiris, although the most practical access depends on the route and local conditions. For guests in Asteri Village it is also an easy local option, approx. 3 km · about 5 min along the coastal road. The beach is wide and sandy, with organised sections and quieter areas, and it is an important nesting area for loggerhead sea turtles.
Sfakaki offers a straightforward north-coast swim without turning the day into a long drive: approx. 3 km · about 5 min from the Asteri villas.
Skaleta, approx. 4 km · about 5 min, is one of the closest sections of the north coast to the Asteri villas.
Adelianos Kampos, approx. 7 km · about 10 min, is a more organised beach area with services nearby, useful when facilities, food and practical options matter. Platanes, approx. 9 km · about 15 min, is similar and closer to town.
Rethymno Town Beach, approx. 12 km · about 15 min, is best when the day also includes the Old Town, harbour, shopping or dinner.
Geropotamos, approx. 8 km · about 10 min east, is chosen more for its landscape and different atmosphere than for easy conditions. It is exposed to the north wind, so check wind and sea before setting out.
Panormo, approx. 14 km · about 15 min, combines a coastal village atmosphere with several small beach areas, useful for guests who want more than a simple swim.
Bali, approx. 25 km · about 30 min, is a coastal village with several coves and beach areas. It works better as a larger north-coast outing than as a quick local swim, and it is also a good swim on the way back from a Knossos day.
Rethymno Town Beach is useful when the beach is only one part of the day. Swim, change pace and continue towards the Old Town or harbour later. It works best when the group avoids too much walking in the hottest hours and plans parking and the evening return before dinner. See the Rethymno Old Town Guide for practical timing.

Episkopi Beach, approx. 27 km · about 30 min, offers a longer sandy-beach day west of Rethymno. The route runs past the city, so treat it as a planned beach day rather than a quick local swim. It combines well with Lake Kournas and Argyroupoli.
For families, the easiest beach is often the one with a simple drive, practical access and the option to leave before everyone becomes tired. No beach should be treated as guaranteed calm or universally child-safe. Wind, waves, currents and local conditions can change, so ask locally and adapt the plan.

Much of the north-coast beach east of Rethymno is an important nesting area for loggerhead sea turtles. During the nesting and hatching season, respect marked nests and protective cages, keep away from hatchlings and never touch or move them. Avoid artificial lights, flash photography, vehicles, fires and late-night activity on nesting beaches, and follow current ARCHELON and local guidance. Sightings are never guaranteed.
Beach conditions can differ even on the same day. Before leaving the villa, check the wind, waves and current local guidance. Where safety flags, lifeguards or posted instructions are present, follow them. Do not assume that yesterday’s calm sea, sunbeds or supervised swimming will be the same today. The north wind in summer often makes the north coast wavy; on those days the south coast or a sheltered cove may be the better choice.

The south coast feels different: longer routes, stronger landscapes and a day that needs more planning. For a seven-night stay, one south-coast beach day can add variety without making every day a road trip. All four are 55 minutes to an hour from the villas, through Spili or the Kotsifou and Kourtaliotiko gorges.

For the full south-coast plan, with roads, Preveli access and group advice, see South Rethymno Beaches.
Ammoudaki is a small, sheltered cove traditionally popular with naturists. Swimwear and naturist visitors may share the beach, so families should know what to expect before visiting.
The three Asteri villas (Villa Asteri, Villa Kitron and Villa Myrrini) share the same beach logic. Sfakaki, Stavromenos and Skaleta are about 5 minutes away. A beach morning can be followed by pool time at the villa, and one or two longer outings (Geropotamos, Panormo or the south coast) add variety during a longer stay.

Villa Argiris is closer to the north coast than the Asteri villas. Stavromenos beach is approximately 800 metres from Villa Argiris, although the most practical access depends on the route and local conditions. Nearby local swims may be practical when conditions suit. Villa Argiris is close to the coast but is not beachfront.
Groups across the three MAZI villas may share some beach outings while separate households make their own plans. More than one car adds flexibility when people want different beaches or different return times.

Choose the beach by the wind and the day, not by the name. On a calm morning the beaches five minutes from the villas are all you need; when the north wind is up, a sheltered cove or the south coast is worth the drive. And leave time for the pool: a short swim in the sea and a long afternoon at the villa is often the best beach day.
