Chania or Heraklion Airport: Which Is Better for Reaching Rethymno?

A practical arrival guide for private villa guests choosing between Crete’s two main airport sides.

Why Airport Choice Matters More for a Villa Stay

For a city hotel, arrival may end when you reach reception. A private villa arrival includes more decisions: collecting luggage, meeting a driver or car hire company, travelling to Asteri or Stavromenos, coordinating check-in, managing children or older relatives and making sure the first evening is not unnecessarily stressful.

Arrival factorWhy it matters
Landing timeDaytime and late-night arrivals create very different first-evening plans.
LuggageThe vehicle must fit the passengers, suitcases, pushchairs and any mobility equipment.
Children or older guestsThe lowest-stress option may matter more than a small difference in route distance.
Pre-booked hire-car collectionPre-booking usually gives more vehicle choice and reduces the risk of waiting for a suitable car to be found or prepared; desk hours, paperwork, child seats and out-of-hours procedures must still be confirmed.
Private transferVehicle capacity, luggage space, child seats, meeting point and final price require confirmation with the provider.
First-evening foodLate arrivals need a simple food plan; do not assume shops or tavernas will still be open. Grocery pre-stocking is available on request.
Driving confidenceSome guests prefer not to begin a holiday by driving unfamiliar roads while tired or after dark.

Neither column is a universal recommendation. The final choice depends on the actual flights, group and itinerary.

Choose by Total Journey, Not Distance Alone

A small theoretical route advantage is rarely worth an inconvenient flight, a very late landing or a difficult connection. Look at the journey from your home airport to the villa as one continuous plan.

  • Compare the scheduled landing time, not only the departure time.
  • Allow for baggage collection and the hire-car or transfer handover. When collecting a car at the airport, pre-book it before travelling rather than relying on a vehicle being arranged after landing.
  • Check whether the people travelling will be comfortable driving after the flight.
  • For long-haul journeys, avoid an unnecessarily tight same-day connection when a calmer plan is available.
  • Consider the return flight as well as arrival; an early departure can change which airport feels practical.

Car Hire, Private Transfer or a Mixed Approach?

From either airport we recommend a hire car or a private transfer by taxi or minivan.

Hire car from the airport

When the group plans to collect a hire car at the airport, pre-booking is normally the best approach. It gives guests a wider choice of vehicles, makes it easier to select the right size for passengers, luggage, pushchairs or child seats, and reduces the risk of waiting while a suitable car is found or prepared after landing. The driver can then begin the journey with a clearer collection plan and immediate flexibility for shopping, beaches and later day trips. Final collection time still depends on baggage, queues, desk procedures and the confirmed provider arrangements.

Private transfer first

A pre-arranged transfer can reduce pressure after a late flight, a long journey or an arrival with tired children, older relatives or a large amount of luggage. Some guests then arrange a hire car later. Ask Argyris and he can suggest a transfer company. Final availability, vehicle, child seats, price, meeting details and terms are confirmed with the provider for the specific booking.

Mixed transport

Groups arriving on different flights may use more than one transfer or vehicle. A mixed approach can also help when only one person wants to drive or when different households need independence during the stay.

Late Arrivals and the First Evening

For a late arrival, the strongest plan is usually the simplest one. Decide before travelling who is driving, how the group will reach the villa, whether the vehicle fits all luggage, and what everyone will eat after arrival.

Do not assume that rental desks, supermarkets, tavernas, petrol stations or delivery services will suit the landing time. Check the arrangements that matter to your booking and keep the first evening deliberately light. Grocery pre-stocking is available on request.

Check-in is from 15:30 and check-out is by 11:00. Early luggage drop-off, out-of-hours collection and any special arrival support must also be confirmed rather than assumed.

Families, Older Relatives and Mobility Considerations

Families often benefit from choosing the flight and transport plan with the fewest pressure points. A slightly different airport may be worthwhile when it offers a better arrival hour, simpler connection or more suitable vehicle arrangement.

Before confirming the flight, consider child-seat requirements, pushchairs, the number and size of suitcases, walking at the airport, waiting time, transfer vehicle access and whether anyone will find a late drive difficult. Guests with mobility considerations should discuss the complete journey and the specific villa layout with Argyris before booking.

Groups, MAZI and Split-Flight Arrivals

Rethymno can work well for groups arriving through different airport sides, but split arrivals need a clear plan. One lead guest should collect the flight details, passenger numbers, luggage counts and transport choice for each household.

MAZI combines Villa Asteri, Villa Kitron and Villa Myrrini for up to 20 guests. Several vehicles may be more practical than one large vehicle when households arrive separately or want different daily plans. MAZI is accommodation, not an event venue.

Long-Haul and Connecting Travellers

Guests travelling from the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Asia or other long-haul markets should compare the full connection, not only the final domestic flight. Both Chania and Heraklion may work after an Athens or European connection.

Connection time, baggage rules, possible overnight stops and driving fatigue can matter more than the final airport. The first full day does not need to become a major excursion; a slower recovery day at the villa may be the better plan.

Asteri Village and Stavromenos Arrival Logic

Villa Asteri, Villa Kitron and Villa Myrrini are in Asteri Village. Villa Argiris is in Stavromenos. Both airport sides can work for either location, so the airport should not be chosen from a simplified “Asteri equals one airport, Stavromenos equals the other” rule.

Information to Share Before Arrival

  • Arrival airport and flight number.
  • Scheduled landing date and time.
  • Villa name or MAZI booking.
  • Number of adults and children.
  • Number of large suitcases, pushchairs and mobility items.
  • Child-seat requirements.
  • Whether you plan to collect a hire car, use a transfer or combine both.
  • Whether different households arrive on separate flights.
  • Any mobility, fatigue or late-arrival issue that affects the plan.

Send the details early enough for the practical options to be checked. A request is not a confirmed third-party arrangement until the relevant provider has accepted it.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is Chania or Heraklion Airport better for a Rethymno villa stay?

Both can work. Choose the airport that gives your group the strongest total journey: suitable flights, a manageable arrival hour, realistic luggage and transport arrangements, and a comfortable first evening.

How long does the airport-to-villa journey take?

From the villas, Heraklion Airport is approx. 73 km, about 60 minutes by car, and Chania Airport approx. 79 km, about 75 minutes by car. Times are approximate, without stops; traffic, season and the final approach can change the actual journey, so check the route on the day.

Should we collect a hire car at the airport?

Yes, when the driver is comfortable continuing the journey. The car should be pre-booked before travel so the group has more choice and can confirm the correct vehicle, luggage capacity, child seats and collection procedure. This usually reduces avoidable waiting after landing and helps the journey begin more smoothly. For a very late or tiring arrival, a pre-arranged transfer first and a hire car later may still suit the group better.

Is a private transfer better for families?

It may be, especially after a late flight or when the group has tired children, older relatives or substantial luggage. Ask Argyris and he can suggest a transfer company. The vehicle, child seats, luggage capacity, price and availability are confirmed with the provider for the booking.

Can we use public transport from the airport?

We recommend a hire car or a private transfer by taxi or minivan. Public transport routes and timetables change and do not take guests directly to Asteri or Villa Argiris, which makes them impractical with luggage, children or a late arrival.

Can members of the group arrive through different airports?

Yes, but split arrivals should be coordinated. Share each flight, passenger and luggage plan, appoint one lead guest and decide whether the group needs separate transfers or vehicles.

Should we drive after a late flight?

That depends on the driver’s confidence, tiredness, landing time, luggage and the confirmed collection process. Many guests prefer the simplicity of a transfer after a very late or long journey.

What should we plan for the first night?

Plan transport, check-in communication, simple food and any child or mobility needs before travelling. Do not assume that shops, tavernas, fuel or delivery will be available at the arrival hour. Grocery pre-stocking is available on request.
