A practical, locally written guide to staying in Asteri Village: what the village feels like, what is actually there, whether you need a car, what to do each day and who this quiet villa base suits best.
By Argyris Skordilis, owner and host · Updated
Asteri is a small residential village among olive groves, not a resort. The pleasure of staying here is a private villa as your base while ordinary village life carries on around you.

There is no nightlife or promenade outside the door, and for most guests who choose Asteri that is the point.
Asteri is small. A few everyday things are in the village or next door in Chamalevri; for the rest you drive a few minutes. The map shows where they are.

| What | In Asteri? | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Kafeneio and square | Yes | Irini’s Cafe Neon on the village square, by the old fountain, for a coffee or a plate of meze (checked 20 September 2026) |
| Taverna and folklore museum | Yes | Poliou House, the village taverna, a short walk from the villas, with a small folklore museum; check opening days and book for busy evenings (checked 20 September 2026) |
| Taverna next door | Chamalevri | Romeo & Juliet (checked 20 September 2026) |
| Church | Yes | Agios Georgios; the village feast day is in November |
| Children’s playground | Chamalevri | Approx. 500 m from the villas |
| Fruit and vegetables | Van | A greengrocer’s van comes on set days; ask Argyris which days |
| Supermarket and bakery | No | In the wider Stavromenos area, a few minutes by car |
| Pharmacy | No | Approx. 2 km away |
| Cash machine | No | In Stavromenos, a few minutes by car |
| KTEL bus | Yes | Stops on the village street; limited, seasonal service |
| EV charging | At the villas | Free at all three villas; mention it when you book |
A Cretan night with food, music and dancing takes place nearby on Thursdays and Fridays, from late April to mid-October. Opening days, seasonal operation and the greengrocer’s schedule can change, so confirm locally for your stay.
Early morning is the best part of the day here. One of the easiest routes is the loop marked on the map, approx. 1.8 km through the olive groves between Asteri and Chamalevri, and you can carry on along the country roads for longer. The roads are surfaced, so a pushchair is fine on them; the dirt tracks between the groves are not.

They are village roads rather than a running track: cars and the occasional tractor use them too, there is no pavement to speak of, and once you leave the village there is little lighting. Go before the heat, take water, and wear something bright early in the morning or near dusk.
Heraklion airport is approx. 73 km (about 60 min) away and Chania airport approx. 79 km (about 75 min); pick up a hire car or book a private transfer (taxi, minivan or minibus). There is no supermarket in Asteri, so do the first food shop in the Stavromenos area, just off the national road, before you drive up to the village.

Times are approximate, without stops; check the route on the day.
Yes, for most guests. A car makes beaches, supermarkets, Rethymno and day trips easy to combine.

|---|---|
| April–May | Green countryside, pleasant walking and cooler evenings; some seasonal businesses are still opening. |
| June–September | Hot days built around the pool, with beaches and sightseeing in the morning or late afternoon; busier coasts, roads and car parks; the sea is often wavy on windy days. |
| October | Quieter and still warm; opening days and local events start to change. |
| November–March | A lived-in village with far fewer visitor services; the olive harvest runs through winter. All three villas in Asteri have air conditioning with heating and a fireplace. |
From spring to autumn, avoid the midday heat and follow local advice on wildfire risk. The emergency number is 112.

Also close: Melidoni Cave (approx. 19 km · about 25–30 min), Arsani Monastery by neighbouring Pangalochori, and the Roman olive press at Manouses near Chamalevri. Wedding guests: Agreco Farm is approx. 6.5 km · about 10 min; see Stay near Agreco Farm.
Asteri means “star”. Local tradition links the name to a marble lion’s head that once shone on the village fountain. The village has known hard times: houses were destroyed during the Cretan revolt of 1866, and in June 1941, in the first weeks of the German occupation, villagers of Asteri were executed and much of the village was burned. A memorial in the village commemorates those who died. Over the following decades families returned, and many of the old stone houses were restored or rebuilt, among them Villa Asteri, the family home and carpentry workshop.

The land is older still: excavations nearby have uncovered Minoan settlements on the Kakavella hill and, at Manouses by Chamalevri, a complete Roman olive press. Olive oil has been made on these slopes for two thousand years, and the groves around the villas are still harvested each winter.
Families live and work in Asteri all year. Keep music and voices low late in the evening, park in the villa parking rather than on the lane, drive slowly, give way to farm vehicles and respect homes, fields and olive groves. Eating at the local tavernas and buying from the greengrocer’s van supports the village; please do not fly drones over neighbours’ houses.

| A good fit for | Not the best choice for |
|---|---|
| Families who want a private pool, kitchen and a flexible routine | A holiday without a car |
| Couples and slow travellers who prefer quiet evenings | Stepping from the villa onto the beach |
| Multigenerational groups who need separate bedrooms and rest between outings | Nightlife and many restaurants on foot |
| Travellers with a hire car who like day trips | Guests who need fully step-free accommodation |
| Repeat visitors and long-haul travellers who want a calmer base | A resort with services on site |
| Wedding guests who want their households close together | A wedding venue: the villas are accommodation only |
For a wedding nearby, the three villas can host guests’ households side by side, and Agreco Farm is approx. 6.5 km, about 10 minutes, away. See Best Villas near Rethymno for Wedding Guests and How to Organise a Wedding Guest Stay.

Three villas, 30–90 m apart, each with its own private pool. None is officially wheelchair accessible; if anyone has reduced mobility, ask Argyris to check the route from the parking to the bedrooms before you book. A minivan or minibus can reach the villas for a private transfer; for driving yourself every day, a smaller car is easier in the village lanes.

| Villa | Sleeps and layout | Steps | Parking |
|---|---|---|---|
| Villa Asteri | Up to 8 · 4 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms · the heritage house, with a children’s pool | Ground-floor bedrooms; 20 steps to the upper floor | 2 cars |
| Villa Kitron | Up to 6 · 3 en-suite bedrooms + WC · hydromassage pool, large veranda | 1 at the entrance; 15 to the first floor | 2 cars of any size |
| Villa Myrrini | Up to 6 · 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms on one level · children’s pool | 17 from the parking to the door | 2 small cars or 1 large |
All three have heating for the cooler months and free EV charging; direct bookings include the Breakfast Basket. Travelling as a group? Two or three villas can be booked together as MAZI for up to 12, 14 or 20 guests, each household in its own house; the price is the sum of the villas, and the minimum stay varies by villa and season, so Argyris confirms it for your dates in the proposal. Villa Argiris in Stavromenos is not part of MAZI and is booked separately: together, up to 28 guests in two locations. Compare the villas or use the Group Stay Planner.

We always suggest treating the villa as the centre of your stay: a beach or Arkadi in the morning, back to the pool in the afternoon, and a quiet dinner in the evening. Tell us how your group travels and we will help you decide whether Asteri, and which villa, fits.
