The story, in short

Villa Asteri was the Skordilis family home, and half of it was the carpentry workshop of Argyris’s father. When the house became a villa, the workshop was not cleared out: his sideboard still stands in the kitchen, his tools hang on the walls, and old hand planes became the bedside lamps. Argyris made the dining table, the sofas and the bathroom vanities himself, in the same rooms.

The other three houses came later, each with its own character. Argyris still answers the messages himself and, in most cases, opens the door when guests arrive.

“Half of this house was our home, and half was my father’s workshop. I grew up between the two — sawdust on one side of the wall, my mother’s cooking on the other. I couldn’t let that go. So I kept it: in the furniture, the tools, the lamps. When I make something for the villa, I’m continuing what he started.”

Story ideas

Five things about the villas that are not on every other listing.

  • The workshop that became a house

Half of Villa Asteri was the carpentry workshop of Argyris’s father. The sideboard he made still stands in the kitchen; Argyris built the tables, sofas and bathroom vanities in the same spirit.

  • Three houses, one extended family

MAZI: Villa Asteri, Villa Kitron and Villa Myrrini booked together for up to 20 guests. Each household keeps its own kitchen, pool and front door, and everyone eats together in the evening.

  • A Cretan village, not a resort

Asteri has a kafeneio, an old fountain and a taverna 100 m from the villas. The KTEL bus to Rethymno stops outside.

  • Breakfast from small producers

Direct bookings come with a Breakfast Basket of olive oil, cheese, bread, paximadi, jam and fruit from small Cretan producers.

  • Crete outside summer

Air conditioning with heating and a wood-burning fireplace in every villa make the villas a base for spring, autumn and winter stays near Rethymno.
