Your first meal in Crete might be dinner at a nearby taverna after unpacking, or bread, local cheese and tomatoes shared at the villa. You might prefer to open the fridge and find your shopping already put away, ready for a quiet evening on the terrace.
The easiest plan depends on when you reach the villa and whether you want to shop yourself. At Amazing Villas in Crete, we can help you organise those first essentials around your arrival, so the holiday begins with fewer things to arrange.

Use your expected arrival time at the villa, allowing for baggage collection, car hire and the drive from the airport.

| Your arrival plan | The easiest approach |
|---|---|
| Around check-in, from 15:30 | Settle in, then visit a nearby supermarket for your first essentials. |
| In the afternoon | Make a short shopping stop on the way or shop soon after check-in, depending on opening hours. |
| Late in the evening, after shops close | Arrange food for the first evening and breakfast beforehand; do your main shopping the next day. |
| You would like everything ready, whatever the time | Request grocery pre-stocking and confirm your final list with us at least two days before arrival. |
If you reach the villa around 15:30, there is usually time to unpack, look around the kitchen and then head out for a short shop, subject to that day’s opening hours.
Check what is already available before buying more. Start with enough for breakfast and a light lunch, adding dinner supplies if you plan to eat at the villa. You can plan the rest once everyone has settled in.
Ask Argyris which supermarket suits your villa and whether you will need transport.
For an afternoon arrival, decide whether a supermarket stop fits more comfortably before or after check-in.
A short stop on the way can save another journey, especially when travelling with children. If everyone needs a break first, going to the villa may be the better choice, as long as there is still time to shop afterwards.
We can help you choose a suitable stop for your route to Asteri or Stavromenos. Check opening hours for your arrival day, particularly on Sundays, public holidays or outside the main summer season.
If you are travelling by taxi or private transfer, discuss any shopping stop in advance.
When you expect to arrive after the shops have closed, organise the first evening and breakfast before travelling.
Keep the plan simple: something ready to eat, drinks, breakfast essentials and anything specific that children or guests with dietary requirements will need. If you would prefer a taverna dinner, check kitchen opening hours with us beforehand.
Grocery pre-stocking can help with this. Your final shopping list must be confirmed with us at least two days before arrival, giving us time to buy the products and put them away before you reach the villa. For the full request and confirmation process, use the dedicated Grocery Pre-stocking page.
If your journey is delayed, let Argyris know so you can review the arrival plan together.
You do not need to be arriving late to use grocery pre-stocking. You may simply prefer to spend your first afternoon by the pool instead of visiting a supermarket.
Send us your requested products and quantities before your trip. We will confirm the shopping arrangements and cost with you.
The final list must be agreed at least two days before your arrival. Include any essential brands, dietary requirements and whether substitutions are acceptable.
The Cretan Breakfast Basket is included with direct bookings at every one of our villas, for all dates, without a separate request or minimum stay.

It is part of the official T-Cert / SETKE Breakfast Basket programme. This guide does not duplicate the programme explanation; see Book Direct for the official framework and how we apply it. Confirm current contents before relying on any specific item.
The Basket and grocery pre-stocking serve different purposes:
| Cretan Breakfast Basket | Grocery pre-stocking |
|---|---|
| Included with direct bookings | An additional service available on request |
| A changing selection of local breakfast products | Products and quantities agreed from your shopping list |
| A starting point for your first mornings | A way to organise meals, extra supplies and personal preferences |
Before buying, check the confirmed Basket contents and any other supplies available in your villa. Ask about the coffee machine too, so you bring or order the right coffee or capsules.
Most of our guests choose to have dinner at a nearby taverna on their first evening. After travelling and settling in, it is a relaxed way to enjoy local food without the effort of cooking or clearing up.

Ask Argyris for a nearby option that suits your group and arrival time. If you arrive late, check with us beforehand about kitchen opening hours.
If you plan to eat at a taverna, keep your first shopping list focused on breakfast, drinks and a few snacks. You can buy more once you have settled in.
For a light arrival meal, choose food that takes only a few minutes to put on the table:
Serve the ingredients separately so everyone can choose what they enjoy. The same products can contribute to breakfast or lunch the following day.
If you would like these groceries waiting at the villa, your final shopping list must be confirmed with us at least two days before arrival.
A relaxed first breakfast needs only a few choices: bread or rusks, yoghurt, fruit, cheese, honey and coffee or tea.

Use the confirmed Breakfast Basket contents as your starting point, then add what your group needs. That might mean a particular milk, extra fruit, eggs or familiar breakfast food for the children.
There is no need to prepare an elaborate meal. You can explore bakery favourites and cooked Cretan breakfasts during the rest of your stay.
Choose ingredients that work across more than one meal. Tomatoes, cucumber, cheese, rusks and olive oil can become a simple salad or dakos-style lunch. Bread and cheese can make sandwiches; yogurt and fruit can finish the meal.

If you decide to eat out, those ingredients can remain useful for another meal when stored according to their labels. Buying modest amounts first gives you room to change your plans.
Start small for the first 24 hours and adjust to the group you actually have. Buy enough for the arrival meal, breakfast and a light lunch only if you expect to eat all three at the villa. Reduce the list if you plan to eat at a taverna, and subtract anything already confirmed in your Breakfast Basket or pre-arranged supplies.

For fresh food, appetite, children, dietary needs and the meals you plan to eat elsewhere matter more than a fixed per-person formula. If you are unsure, choose modest quantities first and top up after everyone has settled in.

Buy chilled products towards the end of your shopping trip and put them in the fridge promptly when you reach the villa. Keep packaging so storage instructions and ingredient information remain available.
For allergies, check individual products and discuss suitable choices with us before the shopping list is finalised.
Every one of our villas has a BBQ and a wood-fired oven. If you would like to use them during your stay, ask for the villa’s instructions and current conditions for use. Your first evening can stay as simple as you wish.
