Villas near Rethymno: What to Know Before You Book

“Near Rethymno” sounds precise, but it can describe very different stays. A villa might be in a traditional village, close to the north-coast road, near a beach area or within easier reach of the Old Town. Two properties with a similar map distance can create completely different daily routines.

Rethymno, also spelt Rethymnon, is the town on the north coast of Crete that our villas are near: Asteri Village and Stavromenos are both about 15 minutes away.

The right question is not simply how many kilometres separate the villa from Rethymno. It is how the location works for the journeys you will repeat, the amount of driving your group accepts and the kind of evening you want to return to.

What “Near Rethymno” Should Answer

Map of CreteCrete runs west to east: Chania, Rethymno, Heraklion and Lasithi. Where Rethymno is. Crete is about 260 km from west to east. Rethymno sits between the island’s two main airports. Our villas in Asteri Village and Stavromenos are just east of Rethymno town: approx. 73 km (around an hour) to Heraklion airport and 79 km (around 75 minutes) to Chania airport, and about 11–12 km from Rethymno town.
QuestionWhy it matters
Where exactly is the villa?Regional labels can cover very different roads and settings.
Which journeys will we repeat?Repeated trips shape the holiday more than one distant excursion.
What is the final approach like?Narrow roads, turns, parking and night arrival affect driver comfort.
Which beach will we realistically use?The nearest coastline is not always the beach that best suits the group.
Can we walk anywhere useful?Distance alone ignores heat, lighting, pavements and road conditions.
What happens on the first evening?Late arrivals need a plan for keys, food, water and transport.

Choose a Daily Rhythm, Not a Radius

A radius on a booking platform cannot explain how a stay feels. Ten minutes on one road may be easier than a shorter route through a busy centre. A village villa may offer peace and private outdoor life but require a car for most outings. A coastal-side villa may connect easily with services yet still not be beachfront or safely walkable to the sea.

List the places you expect to use repeatedly: a supermarket, preferred beach, Rethymno Old Town, a wedding venue or another family’s accommodation. Ask for live navigation when precise journey time matters. No guide can promise exact driving minutes, which can change with traffic, route and season.

Village and Coastal-Side Stays Are Different

None is automatically superior. The best fit depends on whether the villa is the centre of the holiday or a place to sleep between outings.

Asteri Village: A Villa-Led Rhythm

Asteri suits guests who want a quieter village base and expect private villa time to be a meaningful part of the stay. Villa Asteri, Villa Kitron and Villa Myrrini are located there, each with its own private spaces.

MAZI combines those three villas for up to 20 guests. It can suit families and groups who want to stay close while retaining separate kitchens, living areas and pools. Availability for the same dates must be checked across all three villas.

A village address should not be translated into a promise that every service is walkable. Guests should confirm transport, food plans, the exact villa approach and any route that matters to the group.

Stavromenos: A Different Coastal-Side Context

Villa Argiris is in Stavromenos, in a different location from the villas in Asteri Village, and is not part of MAZI. It offers a sea-view setting with a coastal-side context, but it should not be described as beachfront.

Stavromenos may suit guests who value north-coast access and practical movement towards services and Rethymno-area plans. As with any location, the decision should use exact current information rather than assuming that “coastal” means direct beach access or that every journey can be made on foot.

The choice between Asteri and Stavromenos is therefore not a ranking. It is a choice between two different stay rhythms.

How Do You Get Back from the Old Town at Night?

Rethymno Old Town is one reason many guests choose the region. Staying outside it can preserve pool space, privacy and quieter mornings, while still allowing planned evenings in town.

Decide in advance how the group will travel in and return. Consider parking, drivers who may not want to drink, taxis or transfers, and different bedtimes within the group. Do not assume a permanent taxi fare or availability; variable provider details need current confirmation.

If walking to restaurants every evening is essential, an out-of-town villa may not be the right product. If a private outdoor setting matters more, planned town evenings may be a comfortable trade-off.

From our villas the old town is about 11–12 km away. If everyone wants a glass of wine with dinner, book a taxi back in advance; Argyris can help.

Which Beach Near Rethymno Suits You?

The nearest point on the coast may not provide the shade, access, facilities, water conditions or atmosphere your group wants. Families, confident swimmers and guests seeking a quiet beach can make different choices from the same villa.

Ask which beaches guests commonly consider, then check current access and conditions. Build flexibility into the day; wind and sea conditions can change which option feels best. A villa near Rethymno can support several beach choices without promising that one particular beach will suit everyone.

A long sandy beach runs east from Rethymno town towards Platanes and Adelianos Kampos, and Sfakaki beach is close to Stavromenos. Rethymno’s town beach has a Seatrac, a self-operated chair that helps people with limited mobility into the sea.

Do You Need a Car Near Rethymno?

Many private villas outside Rethymno are easiest with a car. What matters is not only having one, but whether the assigned drivers are comfortable with the routes and parking.

You can also manage without a car at our villas in Asteri Village: the KTEL bus to Stavromenos and Rethymno town stops outside, and Argyris can book taxis for you. Several guests stayed this way in 2026. Timetables change with the season, so check e-ktel.com or ask Argyris.

Confirm:

  • the exact map location and recommended approach;
  • parking arrangements at the villa;
  • any narrow or steep part of the final road;
  • night-arrival instructions;
  • vehicle-size considerations if relevant;
  • the plan for guests arriving on different flights;
  • current provider terms if using hire cars or transfers.

Amazing Villas in Crete can help guests enquire about private transfers and car hire through independent providers. Availability, prices, payment and booking terms are confirmed for the specific stay, and providers are paid directly.

Plan the First 24 Hours

Late flights, tired travellers and closed shops can make the first evening harder than any later day. Confirm the check-in method, contact point, first-night food, drinking water and breakfast plan. If several cars are involved, agree on a meeting point that does not depend on everyone reaching the villa at the same moment.

This is also the time to check whether the group needs grocery pre-stocking, baby equipment or transport support. Grocery pre-stocking is available on request, subject to confirmation. The Amazing Villas in Crete Breakfast Basket is included with direct bookings at every villa; it is a welcome breakfast provision, not a full grocery supply. Baby equipment and transport arrangements must be confirmed for the specific stay.

How to Compare the Amazing Villas in Crete Options

Use Compare the Villas for factual differences, Which Villa Fits Your Stay? for a guided shortlist and the individual villa pages for current property facts. Do not choose from bedroom count or map distance alone.

For one household, focus on layout, bathrooms, outdoor rhythm and location. For a larger group, decide whether everyone genuinely wants one shared house or whether nearby private villas will work better. MAZI combines Villa Asteri, Villa Kitron and Villa Myrrini in Asteri Village for up to 20 guests. Villa Argiris is not part of MAZI; for groups of more than 20, it can be added to MAZI for up to 28 guests, but it is in a different location (Stavromenos, about 2.6 km from Asteri) and is booked separately.

There is no single best villa overall. The right choice is the one that supports the group’s real journeys and routines.

From Argyris

When guests ask how near a villa is to Rethymno, I first ask what they expect to do there and how often. An Old Town dinner, a daily commute to an event and one sightseeing visit are three different location questions.

Is Asteri Village suitable for a villa holiday near Rethymno?

Yes, for guests who want a quiet village base and time at the villa. A traditional taverna is about 100 m away on foot, the KTEL bus to Stavromenos and Rethymno town stops outside the villas, and Argyris can arrange taxis. A car makes beach days and trips easier.
