The house · Villa Asteri
The Carpenter’s House
The Skordilis family built this house in Asteri in 1955. Half of it was home; the other half was the carpentry workshop of Argyris’s father, and nobody ever tidied that history away. The green sideboard he made still stands in the kitchen, and his tools hang on the walls like a small exhibition.
Argyris made much of the furniture himself, in the same spirit: the cypress-wood dining table, the two sofas and coffee table in the living room, the cypress outdoor sofa, the green glass cabinet and the bathroom vanities. Out in the courtyard, the BBQ table is based on his father’s old workbench, and hand planes have become lamps.
Even the bedrooms carry the story. The ground-floor four-poster room was the workshop itself, and the twin room next door was the family kitchen.
Nobody styled Villa Asteri to look traditional. Its character comes from the family who lived and worked here.
“My father built this house in 1955 and ran his carpentry workshop here. His tools are still on the walls. Today it’s your home in Crete.”— Argyris Skordilis, owner
The green sideboard Argyris’s father made still stands in the kitchen.

“Beautiful villa which suited our family perfectly. Stunning interior and exterior with lots of facilities outside which really enhanced our holiday, such as the pizza oven and BBQ – not to mention the stunning pool and comfortable loungers. Argyris was really good too – he always responded quickly to questions and even left us a delicious cake for our birthdays!!”

“On arrival the villa was exactly as pictured/described and was very clean. Argyris provided an extra key and got wood for the pizza oven for us. … The villa was cleaned mid way through our stay at a time to suit us, with fresh linen and towels.”

Villa Asteri or Villa Argiris?
Choose Villa Asteri when…
You want a house with a past, in a quiet village.
Stairs are no problem: the upstairs bedrooms are 20 steps up.
You want a separate pool for small children.
You may want to add Villa Kitron or Villa Myrrini for a bigger group.
Choose Villa Argiris when…
You want the sea in view, olive groves around you and the beach about 800 m away.
You would like all four bedrooms and the living space on one level.
A private pool and outdoor dining on several levels matter more to you than a children’s pool.
For the cooler months, air conditioning that heats and a wood-burning fireplace are enough for you.
Villa Kitron and Villa Myrrini are the other two houses in Asteri Village; Villa Argiris is in Stavromenos, with sea views, about 800 m from the beach.
A quiet village setting, with Rethymno and the north coast within easy driving distance. A car is recommended for most stays. No car? The KTEL bus to Stavromenos and Rethymno town stops outside the villa, and Argyris can book taxis.
A small Cretan village with a traditional kafeneio and the old fountain. Neighbouring Chamalevri, about 500 m away, has the church and a children’s playground, around 5 minutes on foot.
Argyris Skordilis, your host. I grew up in this house. Ask me anything about the rooms, travelling with children or where to eat, and I’ll answer myself. Usually replies within 12 hours
Hosted by the owner, not a management company. Guests remember the details: a birthday cake left for them, wood fetched for the wood-fired oven, a taxi arranged at the last minute, a personal welcome at check-in.

Direct contact with Argyris before and during your stay
Villa Asteri, Villa Kitron and Villa Myrrini are three independent villas in Asteri Village that can be booked together as MAZI. Each keeps its own kitchen, living space, pool and garden.
Each floor has one bedroom with a double bed and one with two single beds. The ground-floor double has a four-poster bed. The beds are fixed, so the twin beds cannot be pushed together into a double.
Can two families stay at Villa Asteri together?
Yes. Each floor has a double and a twin room, so two households can each take a floor and share the living spaces, garden and pools.
Is Villa Asteri wheelchair accessible?
No. The ground floor, with two bedrooms, is raised about 7–10 cm above the outdoor areas, so there is a small step at the entrance and between the house and the pool terrace. The two first-floor bedrooms are reached by a staircase of 20 steps. Please contact Argyris before booking if you have specific mobility needs.
What is a Parasia?
A traditional Cretan open hearth for cooking over a wood fire. Villa Asteri has one in its outdoor cooking area, along with a BBQ and a wood-fired oven.
Pool and families
Is Villa Asteri good for families with young children?
Yes. It has a separate children’s pool of about 5 m², 0.50 m deep, a fully enclosed garden, and free baby cots and a highchair. An adult must supervise children at all times around both pools.
Can we bring a baby?
Yes. Up to 2 baby cots and a highchair are available. Both are free of charge.
Are the pools heated?
No. Neither the main pool nor the children’s pool is heated.
Location and getting here
How far is Villa Asteri from the beach, Rethymno and the airports?
The nearest beach is about 3 km away, Rethymno about 12 km, Heraklion airport about 73 km (around an hour) and Chania airport about 79 km (around 75 minutes) by car. A car is recommended; without one, the KTEL bus to Stavromenos and Rethymno town stops outside the villa and Argyris can book taxis. Several of our guests managed without a car in 2026.
Is there anywhere to eat within walking distance?
Yes. A traditional Cretan taverna is about 100 m from the villa. A pharmacy and bakery are about 2 km away, and a supermarket, ATM and petrol station about 1.9 km.
Is there an electric car charger?
Yes. Villa Asteri has a Type 2 charger for electric cars, rated up to 22 kW. It is free for guests; please let Argyris know in advance.
Booking and extras
How much does Villa Asteri cost per night?
€310–620 per night for the whole villa, depending on season and length of stay. Check your dates for the exact price.
Is breakfast included at Villa Asteri?
Direct bookings include a Breakfast Basket with local products from small Cretan producers, part of the Greek “Breakfast Basket” programme. A private chef can also be arranged on request.

Yes. Through MAZI it can be booked with Villa Kitron, Villa Myrrini or both, for up to 20 guests, subject to availability.
Is Villa Asteri cleaned during the stay?
Yes, for stays of 6 nights or more: one clean during a 6- or 7-night stay, and more for longer stays, with three cleans in two weeks. Bed linen and towels are changed at each clean.
Are there any taxes or fees on top of the price?
The price you see is the full price: it includes VAT and the Greek government climate resilience fee (€15 per night from April to October, €4 from November to March). Everything is paid online except the climate resilience fee, which by law is paid at the villa during your stay, not with the deposit.
How do you pay?
By card, on the payment page of our booking engine — Visa, Mastercard and American Express are accepted, and your card details go to the booking engine rather than to us. We will never ask you to pay by bank transfer, and we will never ask for a card number by email or message. The deposit, the balance date and the cancellation terms for your dates are shown before you confirm and repeated in your confirmation email.
What is the cancellation policy?
It depends on the rate you choose and the season. The booking engine shows the exact cancellation and payment terms for your dates before you pay. Booking direct also gives you one free date change, and you can transfer the booking to friends. The full terms are on our Terms page.
Are pets allowed at Villa Asteri?
Pets are welcome on request. Please ask Argyris before booking, so he can confirm for your dates.
Can we book a wine or olive oil tasting at the villa?
Yes. Both tastings can be arranged on request during your stay, by the pool or in the garden.
